Problem

The Healthcare Surveillance Authority (Úrad pre dohľad nad zdravotnou starostlivosťou – ÚDZS) is a Slovak public institution headquartered in Bratislava. It's mission is to diligently oversee that healthcare in Slovakia is delivered in the best possible way for patients. When malpractice or a breach occurs, the authority holds the power to enforce accountability.

Their old logo no longer reflected the core values of the institution, making it necessary to refresh and modernize the entire visual identity. The goal was to present a modern public institution grounded in facts, science, and technology, while proudly acknowledging and honoring its historical legacy.

Solution

I aimed to build upon the inherited logo concept — four stacked squares representing the institution’s core pillars. However, it became clear that the authority no longer operates within four, but rather three key domains: supervision of healthcare delivery, oversight of health insurance, and forensic medicine including pathological anatomy.

For this reason, I removed one of the squares. The three remaining domains (or pillars) are now represented in the symbol by three squares rendered in a pseudo-3D space — as “flattened” cubes, scaled in size and stacked vertically.

The final ÚDZS symbol consists solely of the top and side edges of these shapes, creating a layered, interlocking effect. This visual overlap suggests supervision or oversight — the core role of the Authority. Additionally, the composition forms three arrows pointing toward the upper right corner, symbolizing growth and progress.
